Hochschule Niederrhein. Your way.

Combine Apprenticeship and Studies

In a dual study program, you combine in-company vocational training with academic studies. You will receive both an apprenticeship diploma and a bachelor's degree.

Depending on the specialisation semester, you will spend 2 or 3 days per week at the university and 3 or 2 days per week in the company. Prerequisites are a high school diploma or entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences, as well as a corresponding training contract with a company.

How do dual studies work?

Course of study: During the lecture period, students alternate between the company and the university according to a set schedule. During the lecture-free period, block courses are held at the university, depending on the specialization semester.

Two degrees: Right from the start, you experience how the theory of the studies is applied in practical applications at the company. Compared to a conventional apprenticeship and subsequent studies, you also save time, since theory parts of the apprenticeship are recognized within the dual studies. Compared to the conventional Bachelor's Degree programme, two semesters extend the studies. By the time you have completed your studies, you will already be familiar with company processes, which gives you an ideal starting position for your future career. A positive side effect: You also receive the usual remuneration for your apprenticeship, which increases your financial independence.

Application: If you want to take up dual studies, you first need a suitable training place. To do this, you should apply to a company of your choice about a year before the start of your training. Once you have completed your training contract, you can apply online for a dual study program.

In individual cases, an examination for other apprenticeships is also possible.

Note: Dual students are not required to attend vocational school, as they receive student status upon enrolment. Preparation for the skilled worker examination of the IHK is carried out by the company, e.g. through in-house instruction or attendance of preparatory courses, e.g. by the IHK.
