Current projects

JACK&05 (2016-2018)

JACK in teaching education ofbasic mathematics and physics in FB05.

Collaborators:

Prof. Dr. Christof Menzel (project management)

Prof. Dr. Uwe Großmann

cand. oecotroph. Maria-Sophie Schulz

The project JACK&05 was a small project of the funding line "Trying out digitalization in teaching education" of the Hochschule Niederrhein from 2016.

Objectives:

a) Basic objective: building and securing basic knowledge about tests to be evaluated automatically (if necessary in moodle), basic knowledge about JACK and individualized task sheets in mathematics, statistics and physics to be created in it.

b) Detailed goals:

Completion to operational maturity of automatically evaluable individualized JACK/moodle task slips and online tests for various modules of the Degree programmes of the Faculty of Food, Nutrition and Hospitality Sciences 05.

c) Basic goal: Transfer to other fields of teaching at the FB and HSNR-wide (using the know how of SHK).

Results: Final report available upon request.

In the course of the project it became apparent that JACK did not meet the requirements. In the further course the system WIRIS of the company Maths for More was tested. For details see final report.

Life cycle assessments (2014 to date)

The LCA research group of FB05 has been working since 2015 with the software Umberto LCA+ and the database ecoinvent around the topic of "Life Cycle Assessment" (LCA) in the field of food. The project has already been sponsored several times with funds according to the law for the improvement of quality in teaching education and studies at universities in North Rhine-Westphalia (Study Quality Act) (so-called QV funds).

A download about the research profile is availablehere (as of August 2022).

Contact us if you are interested in a research cooperation (companies) or a thesis (students)!

Courses:

ILP/Long-term project/In-depth project LCA (since 2015, start every winter semester).

RFID-NRW-NL (2007/2008)

The pre-project RFID-NRW-NL served the preparation of the INTERREG IV A project R.A.A.S. (RFID Application And Support).

Project duration: January 2007 to June 2008.

Participants of the faculty:

Prof. Dr. Uwe Großmann (Physics and Technical Facility Management), FB 05, Project Management

Prof. Dr. Christof Menzel (Mathematics, Statistics and Applied EDP), FB 05

Prof. Dr. Günter Wentzlaff (Technology in private and large households), FB 05

Prof. Dr. Georg Wittich (Food science, especially food chemistry, analysis and law), FB 05

In connection with this, The Hochschule Niederrhein sponsored an internal research and development project (Project No. 202) from February 1 to December 31, 2007.

From the final report: "The use of RFID systems in the retail and logistics sector has recently been increasing rapidly in many areas. In the food industry, however, specific boundary conditions (e.g. liquid, pasty or temperature-sensitive goods) must be taken into account. In the project carried out, the opportunities and risks of this technology for the food sector could be analyzed in more detail. The work carried out shows that this technology is currently still often used without scientific support and only very sporadically in the food industry. The working group therefore sees great opportunities to significantly expand the level of work achieved with the help of this financial support in the future."

A test bed was set up: the write and read station was installed and put into operation in laboratory room 113 of FB 05. A test track was created to investigate the influence of the distance, the speed as well as the number of RFID tags when passing the antenna. To avoid interfering radiation, the transceiver station was equipped with a shielded housing. The demonstration opportunity this provided was of great help to company contacts.

Mathematics Alignment Courses (2013-2017)

In collaboration with Prof. Dr. Georg Vossen (Faculty of Mechanical and Process Engineering), the university's mathematics alignment courses were designed and introduced in 2013.

Since then, these courses have been offered annually for 7 faculties in each winter semester. At the faculty 05 (as of March 2018), bonus points are awarded for successful participation in the test for the mathematics alignment courses for the written examination in mathematics and physics of the first semester.

Since WS 2017/18, the organization of the courses is solely in the hands of Prof. Dr. Georg Vossen.

CIP (2007)

Within the framework of the Conputer Investment Program (CIP) of the DFG, which has expired in the meantime, funds in the amount of 125 T€ were acquired in 2007 for the renewal of the computer workstation equipment of FB05 (rooms O127 and O207).

Since 2008, this program no longer exists. Since then, further renovations have been financed from project-related tuition fees from the faculties (2009) and from QV funds.
