Life Cycle Assessments

Have you always wanted to know how sustainable our food really is?
You've always wondered how muchCO2 the production of your coffee, your pizza or your muesli bar generates?

Then you've come to the right place! Our ILP deals with exactly these questions. The life cycle assessment method can be used to investigate the sustainability of food products. We work with the software Umberto, which allows us to trace manufacturing processes step by step.

In the first ILP semester you will learn together with the seniors the principles of LCA and how to use Umberto. Your task is to analyze the manufacturing process in your own first simple project. This can be an industrial manufacturing process or one from a large or private household. Here, the graphical representation of their project in Umberto is of great help.

In the second ILP semester, the students extend and apply what they have learned so far to more complex projects, again of their own choosing. The LCAs become more comprehensive. Through the ongoing further training in Umberto and the exchange among each other, you will gain the
necessary deeper knowledge to work on your project. In the last ILP semester, you will continue working on the project from the second semester. Now the specialisation is on the improvement of the LCA.

You will also be available as a contact for the new ILP members and introduce them to the topic of LCA and working with Umberto through practical orientation training. In case of questions or problems, for example with the program, you can always contact the seniors and us.

It is advantageous to have a general interest in sustainability, to enjoy learning new things and to deal scientifically with an important topic. It is helpful to have an interest and understanding of how food is prepared or produced and to want to understand the technical processes involved. Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in the food industry. Many companies place a high priority on sustainable production and are looking for employees with the relevant prior knowledge and analytical understanding.

Therefore, it is advantageous to have already dealt with the topic of energy and resource use during your studies.

We are looking forward to meeting you!
