Hochschule Niederrhein. Your way.

Welcome to the Faculty of Textile and Clothing Technology

The Hochschule Niederrhein, with campuses in Krefeld and Mönchengladbach, is the second largest university in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Preußische Höhere Fachschule für Textilindustrie Mönchengladbach/Rheydt was founded in 1901. In 1971, the Faculty of Textile and Clothing Technology was opened as a separate faculty in Mönchengladbach when the University of Applied Sciences Niederrhein was founded. With over 2,000 students, it is the largest textile faculty in Europe.

The combination of application-oriented research, practically oriented studies, knowledge transfer and cooperation with the regional, national and international economy enables studies with excellently trained graduates. Three Bachelor's and two Master's degree programmes (one taught in English) with different textile fields of study and specializations underline the international focus on global markets in the apparel sector and in the field of technical textiles from the fibre to the end product. Students also gain practical relevance in more than 30 laboratories and pilot plants.

There are a number of cooperation opportunities, which we would like to present below:

The cooperative engineering apprenticeship (KIA) offers a double qualification, combining practical vocational training in a company (IHK training contract) and studies at the faculty. Students can thus be introduced to company processes at an early stage.
Apprenticeships, which will be taught in the Textile Academy opening on the Mönchengladbach campus from 2018, will be given additional perspectives.

Companies have the opportunity to actively offer topics for studies and theses, project topics for the 5th semester and research projects and thus recruit their next generation of employees.

In the area of research activities, the affiliated institute "FTB - Research Institute for Textile and Clothing (FTB)" is successfully involved in many research projects and solution approaches for the textile industry with professors and employees of the faculty. The eWeb Research Centre covers the areas of eBusiness, eCommerce and online trade.

Unique in Europe is the accredited Textile Testing Institute (Public Textile Testing Institute of the Hochschule Niederrhein GmbH (ÖP)), which is based at the Hochschule Niederrhein. The ÖP mainly deals with issues and orders in the field of textile and Clothing Technology. Examinations of personal protective equipment (PPE), textile medical products and products from textile service companies are just as much a part of its daily business as examinations of the industrial reprocessability and hygiene of textiles.

Sustainability is also a relevant topic in the textile and clothing industry and at the university. The university's EthNa Competence Centre CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) offers services for students, graduates and companies who want to plan the design of ethical and sustainable processes.

The Fraunhofer Center for Textile Logistics, in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics, will bundle the relevant industry-specific activities in the future.

Textile training and further education courses for open and individual seminars and the industrial master craftsman course in textile management will be carried out by professors and academic staff of the Faculties in Mönchengladbach (TFI), among others. The sponsor is the Textile and Fashion Network e.V. (TFN), the association of friends and sponsors of the Faculty of Textile and Clothing Technology at Hochschule Niederrhein in Mönchengladbach.

Research Institute for Textile and Clothing (FTB)

Organizationally, the faculty bundles its main research activities in the institute "FTB - Research Institute for Textile and Clothing".
The individual tasks of FTB are divided into the following areas:

  • publicly funded research and development projects
  • research and development projects with industry
  • the promotion of scientific work of all members of the institute and of young scientists in cooperation with the Faculty of Textile and Clothing Technology of the Hochschule Niederrhein

The research activities include subdivided areas such as textile structures, sensor technology, knowledge management, simulation, product development, RFID, PPE, care, hygiene, teXellence, functionalization and smart textiles. Annual research funds are available for this purpose, such as approximately €1.4 million in 2016.

On the homepage of the "FTB - Research Institute for Textile and Clothing" you will find more information about the institute, publications of the last years, as well as the current and completed research projects. Please find the contacts for technical questions or project proposals on the pages of the core research areas.

Center Textile Logistics CTL

The Hochschule Niederrhein and the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML) in Dortmund have joined forces to establish the Center Textile Logistics (CTL). Under the motto "Logistics for textiles - textiles for logistics", the CTL aims to combine the efforts of industry to apply innovative solutions in practical applications and the interests of scientific partners in practical, current research topics in the field of textile logistics in the Lower Rhine region. Behind this is the optimization of logistics processes in the textile industry on the one hand and Textile Technologies for production and logistics on the other. The focus is on five lines of research:

  • Sustainable textile logistics
  • Textile logistics of the last mile
  • Intralogistics and IT in the textile chain
  • Textile logistics for intelligent clothing
  • High-performance textiles in production and logistics

Cooperation opportunities

The Faculty of Textile and Clothing Technology continues to develop consistently and is always oriented towards the requirements of the global markets. This is also reflected in our international orientation and the German and English Degree programmes. In doing so, the faculty takes on the new challenges of the textile industry, such as globalization, technical requirements, pricing and design.

The specialist knowledge is available at all stages of the textile chain. In line with the motto "From the fiber to the end product", teaching education and research is carried out in the faculties. The university's own laboratories and pilot plants allow practical problems from industry to be discussed and analyzed. The aim is to consistently apply application-oriented science in cooperation with the know-how of companies on the one hand and the profound theoretical knowledge of the university on the other.

Cooperation with the Faculty of Textile and Clothing Technology is possible in a variety of ways. Depending on the type of cooperation, there are various options for loose or closer collaboration. If you are interested in a cooperation, you can contact the professor responsible for the subject, the Office of the Dean or the contact person listed.

The following options are available for collaboration with students on Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes

  • 5th semester projects
