MedRed project: AI helps prevent diseases

The coronavirus pandemic is not the only thing that has shown how important digital healthcare solutions are. While preventive check-ups have fallen sharply, interest in home solutions has increased significantly. However, there is currently still a lack of digital, easily accessible services.

This is where the "MedRed" project comes in, which is being developed in collaboration between CorporateHealth - die Gesundheits Company GmbH from Hamburg and the Institute for Modeling and High Performance Computing (IMH) at The Hochschule Niederrhein (HSNR) in Krefeld under the direction of Professor Dr. Dirk Roos. The two institutions are working on innovative diagnostic software for employees who, for example, work from home or are unable or unwilling to attend a full check-up on site for other reasons. "MedRed" is sponsored with around 423,000 euros by the Central Innovation Program for SMEs (ZIM) of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK).

Previous digital offerings often only focus on individual aspects and do not offer a comprehensive analysis of the user's state of health. In contrast, the "MedRed" project is developing an intelligent diagnostic tool that identifies individual risk factors and provides tailored recommendations for health promotion in real time. These recommendations are based on the findings of medical professionals.

The aim of the project is to detect diseases at an early stage and prevent their development instead of treating them at an advanced stage or minimizing complications after a diagnosis. It also aims to sponsor users' health literacy.

Machine learning (ML) will be used to collect and analyze data in order to support medical diagnoses and develop individual preventive measures. The project partners are relying on ML methods to collect and analyze data using eModule solutions with low fidelity, but which enable medical personnel to make findings in real time with high fidelity. The solution should not only detect risks and early stages of diseases, but also reduce health impairments such as absences from work and medical interventions.
