IT Security - Advanced Course

Hochschule Niederrhein. Your way.
About the certificate course

Across all industries, more than half of all German companies are already dependent on the Internet. This information from the German government shows that IT security must be a central priority in companies because business and production processes are based on availability, integrity, authenticity and confidentiality. However, increasing networking increases both the dependence on the Internet and the resulting dangers. This applies in particular to the establishment of Industry 4.0 and the spread of the Internet of Things.

Course objectives

You will be enabled to concretely implement the requirements for IT security in your work environment. Special attention is therefore paid to the practical testing of theoretical knowledge in the university's modern laboratory environment. Topics include secure network structures, firewalling, virtual private networks, secure system configuration, (in)security of cloud services, certificate management, security audits and hacking and securing server systems (hacking lab).
Upon successful degree completion of the course, you will be able to:

  • Evaluate, plan, and implement the architecture of secure network structures.
  • Plan and set up secure firewall systems.
  • Build and operate simple virtual private networks including a public key infrastructure.
  • Understand and defend against attack patterns (hacking lab).
Target group

System administrators and developers from all industries

Teaching and learning education

The original knowledge transfer takes place in the form of a classic seminar. Accompanying exercises immediately link what has been learned with practical knowledge, which promotes a sustainable learning process and facilitates transfer to your own company.

The curriculum and further information can be found in the flyer and in the download area.

Three questions for your lecturer, Prof. Dr. Jürgen Quade:

Why is continuing education in IT security currently of interest to many professionals?
Continuing education in IT security is not only interesting, but a must - and not only for professionals. Our ignorance is exploited by the "Bad Guys"; but everyone is networked and thus jointly responsible for the security of devices, systems and data in their private and business environment.

What are you most looking forward to with this university certificate course?
To show that IT security is not just about technology, but also very much about organization and behavior. We are looking forward to raising participants' awareness of how to handle systems and their own data.

And what can the participants look forward to?
Practicable measures to increase information security and privacy, a really exciting topic that offers a number of surprises and aha effects.
