IT Security - Foundation Course

Hochschule Niederrhein. Your way.
About the certificate course

Incidents in December 2020 such as the successful cyberattack on the Funke media group or the infiltration of around 18,000 companies as part of the SolarWinds attack show that firewalls and antivirus software are no longer sufficient to protect against successful attacks. Every single employee is jointly responsible for IT security in the company, but also for their own security - not just those employees working in IT. Basic knowledge is indispensable for this.

This university certificate course explains attack methods used by malicious hackers and shows how to protect yourself. It also teaches the basics of encryption and types of attacks on end devices and servers, and provides an insight into the legal foundations for IT security in a company.

Course objectives

With successful degree of the course you will be able to:

  • Assess threat situations (espionage, sabotage, misuse).
  • Recognize common attack techniques (for example, ransomware, phishing, viruses, Trojans, code injection) and types of attacks on endpoints and servers (spoofing, code injection, frontal attacks).
  • Evaluate appropriate defenses and protective measures.
  • Understand IT security concepts.
  • Apply knowledge around encryption (communication, data, digital signatures, certificates, symmetric and asymmetric encryption, authentication).
  • Encrypt and decrypt emails and data.
  • Use appropriate measures to protect the integrity of corporate data and their own privacy.
Target group

Employees from all industries with an interest in IT security topics

Teaching and learning education

The original knowledge transfer takes place in the form of a classic seminar. Accompanying exercises immediately link what has been learned with practical knowledge, which promotes a sustainable learning process and facilitates transfer to your own company.

Three questions for your lecturer, Prof. Dr. Jürgen Quade:

Why is continuing education in IT security currently of interest to many professionals?
Continuing education in IT security is not only interesting, but a must - and not only for professionals. Our ignorance is exploited by the "Bad Guys"; but everyone is networked and thus jointly responsible for the security of devices, systems and data in their private and business environment.

What are you most looking forward to with this university certificate course?
To show that IT security is not just about technology, but also very much about organization and behavior. We are looking forward to raising participants' awareness of how to handle systems and their own data.

And what can the participants look forward to?
Practicable measures to increase information security and privacy, a really exciting topic that offers a number of surprises and aha effects.
