Network technology and network security
for modern business networks

Hochschule Niederrhein. Your way.
About the certificate course

Nearly all processes in business, production, supply and administration are based on an IT infrastructure, of which a functioning corporate network is an essential component. The speed, redundancy and security of corporate networks require the use of up-to-date network technology in planning and operation. The development toward Industry 4.0 and smart grids also increasingly requires competencies in modern network technology, even for employees who are not primarily involved in network administration.

Course objectives

In this continuing education programme, participants learn concepts and the use of modern network technology, with a particular focus on practical application in the modern data network laboratory.

The course covers the design and testing of modern corporate networks, network protocols in the TCP/IP environment, basic configuration of routers and switches, implementation of virtual LANs (VLANs), network operation and troubleshooting under IPv4 and IPv6, static and dynamic routing (RIP, OSPF, VLANs) for IPv4/IPv6, network operation with access lists, NAT and DHCP.

The basic course in network technology also prepares students for the external Cisco CCENT (ICND1) examination.

The seminar is divided into three parts: Basic Network Technology Course, Advanced Network Technology Course, Advanced Network Security Course. These can be completed individually or in combination.

  • The basic network technology course also prepares students for the external Cisco CCENT (ICND1) examination.
  • Advanced course Network Technology prepares additionally for the external examination for Cisco CCNA (ICND2).
  • Advanced course Network Security prepares additionally for the external Cisco CCNA Security examination.
Target group

Technicians from all industries who are entrusted with the planning and operation of IT infrastructure. Engineers who develop solutions in distributed environments; network administrators who want to expand their skills.

Teaching and learning education

In the course, time- and location-independent self-learning units with animations, activities and exercises on the simulator are combined with attendance phases for practical application of what has been learned in the data network lab. This promotes a sustainable learning process and facilitates the transfer into the own company.

The curriculum and further information can be found in the flyer and in the download area.

Three questions for your lecturer, Prof. Dr. Thomas Meuser:

Why is continuing education in network technology currently of interest to many professionals?
Increasing networking is penetrating more and more all areas of a company. It is no longer just PCs that are connected to servers, but increasingly also mobile devices, machines, appliances and telephony. New distributed applications are emerging and, in the wake of developments towards Industry 4.0 or Smart Home, the importance of modern corporate networks will increase dramatically. In this course, users, administrators, developers and service providers will acquire the fundamental knowledge and skills to understand the concepts of modern enterprise networks and apply them to their professional activities.

What are you particularly looking forward to in this university certificate course?
Participants always bring their own experiences and problems to the course. This expands the subject matter and reinforces the practical relevance of the content taught.

And what can participants look forward to?
The subject content is taught in an interactive, multimedia online curriculum. The course hours in the network lab are used to acquire practical skills in setting up, configuring and operating company networks. "Learning by Doing!"
