Our institute

In the Institute for Coatings and Surface Chemistry (ILOC), which was founded in 2010 by Prof. Cleve, Prof. Groteklaes, Prof. Ackermann and Dr. Knopf, externally-funded projects from the public sector and industrial projects are carried out on application-oriented research and development tasks in various fields of coatings technology, coatings chemistry, synthesis, chemical engineering, surface modification (physical, biological, chemical) and functionalization or impregnation of polymeric systems and their characterization with modern analytics.

The scientific issues are addressed through bachelor's, master's and doctoral theses in modern laboratories. We therefore guarantee excellent on-site supervision for students who conduct their theses in-house at ILOC, always prioritizing practical relevance.

The ILOC provides sustainable research for the core research areas of Functional Surfaces at the Hochschule Niederrhein, which is one of the university's strongest research areas with more than 49% of the third-party funds acquired. The ILOC makes a significant contribution to further enhancing the existing image of the Hochschule Niederrhein in the field of surface science. This is documented by the third-party funding and publications acquired by members of the ILOC.

The following key points from the specialisations of the faculty are represented in the institute:

  • Coatings Chemistry + Coatings Technology
  • Chemistry Technology
  • Green polymeric materials
  • Biophysical chemistry of surfaces
  • Analytics and metrology for surfaces
