Cliché-free diversity in families and lifestyles
- Children's books and teaching materials as an equality policy benchmark for pedagogy and society

The shortage of skilled workers is greatest in those industries where gender segregation is also most pronounced, namely in the female-dominated caring professions and in the still male-dominated technical field.

One of the main causes of this pronounced and persistent imbalance is restricted gender role models. However, the idea that people differ in their abilities and interests, in their characteristics and basic needs on the basis of their gender and are thus predestined for certain fields of activity and professions, these gender role images are not simply there, they are learned anew by each generation and quickly internalized as normal.

The role of books, teaching materials and other media for children in this socialization process, but also the chances to break through the usual images and representations, is what this afternoon will be about.

The workshop will present the media kit "Cliché-free diversity in families and lifestyles" (https://klischeesc.de/medienkoffer), which can also be borrowed from the Hochschule Niederrhein. The media case contains a selection of children's books and reference books that offer a sound introduction to inclusive and diverse pedagogical practice in daycare centers. It is intended to inspire and support specialists in daycare centers to work in a gender-responsive manner and to address the associated topics (sexual/gender diversity, family constellations, gender stereotypes, etc.) in a child-friendly manner.
