Here you will find many typical questions about the studies at the FB Chemie:
- Should I prepare for mathematics in advance?
Yes! In the studies at the Faculty of Chemistry you need a secure knowledge of mathematics.
If you are unsure whether your previous knowledge is sufficient, you can assess yourself here.
There is a free e-learning course that you can use to prepare well for your studies from home. ( OMB+ )
In addition, you can participate in the mathematics bridge course before the semester begins. The bridge course usually takes place 1-3 weeks before the start of lectures in the winter semester. You can find more information here.
What do I do if I missed the Ersti-Week?
In addition to getting to know the faculty and the other first-year students, the introductory week (Ersti-Woche for short) also includes some mandatory content: The Math Alignment Test, the Technical English Placement, and the Safety Briefing.
Additional safety instruction will also take place during the semester.
You will not have access to lab areas and internships without safety instruction.
The Math Alignment Test will be reviewed again just prior to the Math I written examination. It must be passed in order to receive the course attendance certificate or admission to the examination!
The Language Center Krefeld is responsible for the placement in Technical English. Information about this can be found here.
Before the commencement of studies you will be assigned to exercise groups during the introductory week.
Furthermore, Ms. Treppinger is available as a study advisor for all information concerning the start of studies.
- How do I know which lectures I should attend?
The official Excel timetable can be found and downloaded here.
To get your own overview, you should take a look at your own examination regulations and the module handbook.
- What do I need for the labs "Quali" and "Quanti"?
The basic requirement for the "Quali" (= inorganic-chemical internship) and the "Quanti" (= analytical-chemical internship) is the safety instruction by Prof. Gröschel. This takes place shortly after the beginning of the semester in the lecture for general chemistry. You will receive all further information about the procedure in the respective introductory lectures.
In addition, there is the possibility to find the respective scripts and further information on the internet pages of the laboratories.
Quali (in addition to this, the Quali lab also has a Facebook presence, "Qualimania", where current information is shared).
- What are oral examinations and how do I prepare for them?
Basically, colloquia are short oral examinations in which a certain level of knowledge is tested through a technical discussion. You can ask the professor which topics should be prepared.
In addition, there is the possibility, if enough participants can be found, to attend an additional question hour with the laboratory tutors. The topics to be examined in the oral examination are listed in the laboratory regulations. The respective laboratory regulations can be found on the pages of the respective laboratory. The homepage of the labs can be found here.
- How do I get an appointment for an oral examination? How do I know who is examining me?
In the labs there are lists with the names of the professors assigned to each lab. As a rule, you will receive an appointment by e-mail upon request. The e-mail addresses of the professors can be found on the personal page of the faculty.
- How can I borrow books from the library?
The catalog can be accessed via the library's homepage to search for books from home.
Electronic resources can be downloaded directly. To do this, however, you must be on the university network or have VPN access.
- The library also offers training.
How do I get VPN access?
VPN access can be obtained via the university IT (KIS). For this purpose, an application must be submitted here. Further information can be found on the KIS website.
- Where can I find the current exam dates?
The current examination dates can be found on the homepage of the Chemistry Department on the page Examinations. In addition, the dates can also be viewed in the online service.
- How do I register for examinations?
You can use the TAN list to register for the individual examinations in the online service. Otherwise, and in case of illness, Ms. Tillmann in the Chemistry Department is the right contact person.
- I failed an examination, what do I do now?
If you have failed one or more examinations, this can have many reasons: Personal life circumstances, lack of motivation, too little discipline, too tight a schedule, or the wrong study techniques.
In order for the next examinations to go better, a personal conversation with the study progress advisor Ms. Treppinger can help.
Here you can assess your own situation and together develop a strategy for the next examinations.
- Are my studies still right for me?
Almost all students know doubts about their studies - many have a phase in which they question their choice of studies. If it's more than just slight doubts that seem to "take care of themselves" after a while, you can have a counseling session with the study progress advisor Ms. Treppinger.
Here you can talk about the reasons for your doubts (and also about a possible dropout or change of degree programme) - sometimes a change of course in your own degree programme can help you to enjoy your studies again, and even if you drop out, you can often find good new paths and goals!
- Who do I contact with questions about BAföG?
The AStA has an advice center for this.
- Where can I find the Asta and the faculty student council 01?
In building Q, which is opposite the side entrance of the refectory. Here you can find the building plans. Information about the locations can also be found on the respective homepages.
